Flyer Vision 11-28-16

Flyer Vision - Monday! It is time to turn toward strengthening our self awareness the next few weeks in counseling.  The students will have time to ponder their individual values, strengths, interests and abilities.  During our time together we hope to strengthen our kid's ability to accurately judge their actions and choices to respond appropriately to different social situations.  Our goal is for the kids to become more in tune with their feelings to communicate effectively to others and adjust their actions to match a situation appropriately.

Get Your Mind Right!

Image
MINDSET  link for parents We have been learning about fixed mindsets and growth mindsets K-5 at Concord.  A simplified way to understand our objective:  Are your thoughts helping or hurting you?  Over time we want our students to understand they are in charge of the thousands of thoughts that enter their head during any given day.  As the thoughts register - ask yourself - is this thought helping or hurting me?  As the kids recognize harmful thoughts or fixed mind sets it is then their job to flip their thoughts to a growth mind set.  Time and energy are precious - use them wisely.  Please help your child practice this skill. We will post pictures of our dream catcher or "thought catcher"  when they are finished.

Growing Consequences of not Enough Sleep

Click Here William Shakespeare must have known the value of a good night's sleep when he wrote that it "knits up the ravell'd sleeve of care" and was the "Chief  nourisher   in life's feast". As a parent, you can no doubt write your own poem. An ode to "thine tired child's crabbiness and orneriness" perhaps. But the reasons for a good night's sleep go well beyond mood. "If children are not sleeping well the consequences may be problems with behavior, attention, learning, and memory," says Dr. Shelly Weiss, author of  Better Sleep for Your Baby & Child: A Parent's Step-by-Step Guide to Healthy Sleep Habits  and Pediatric Program Director at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Less sleep, especially before the age of 41 months, has also recently been found to increase hyperactivity-impulsivity and to lower cognitive performance on neurodevelopmental tests. Sleep may affect more than just your child'

Whole Body Listening

Image
Listen with you whole body.  Give yourself permission to do one thing at a time.  Listen and be with the person or persons you are with today.  You will be amazed how your shoulders relax and your mind and ears sharpen as you hear what is being said. Try to listen with your mind, eyes, ears, mouth, heart, hands and feet! You will be amazed how much you hear.

Ice Cream Social

Dear Parents, We cannot express how excited we are to see your children.  Our minds, bodies, hearts, and souls are feeling restored and rested.  This summer has provided time to grow from study, refection, quiet time, exercise, extensive family time, play and relaxation.  I hope your children are as excited as we are to be back to our school community of learning. Our first visit with you and your family will be this Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at our annual Concord Ice Cream Social : Session 1:  Last names beginning with A-M 5:30-6:15 p.m. Session 2:  Last names beginning with N-Z  6:15-7:00 p.m. We also have our first football game of the season this coming Friday, August 19.  Our teens have been working hard all summer to prepare for their fall season: from football, band, poms, cheerleaders... It all rolls out this Friday night at 7:00.  Come visit and enjoy a wonderful evening together!

Luna Moth Sighting

Image
Last night after noticing the full moon and beautiful feel of nature around me I noticed something by our front door. At first glance, I thought it was a note but, I quickly realized it was a living creature. I called my husband and son to come admire it with me. My biology husband informed me it was a Luna moth.  Each wing was wider than your cell phone.       I must say it captured my attention. After inspecting it for a while I ran to get my phone to take a picture and capture the moment. Later, I searched Luna moths and became more excited as I read about them. Their life span as an adult is only 7 days.       The timing of this beautiful moment comes at the closing of our school year and the completion of our son's freshman year of high school. Time does not stand still. May we all be able to smile and know we gave our best at the close of our 7 days.

Attention Seeking Behavior

Image
Attention Seeking Behavior: How to Gently, But Effectively, Stop it by  Jennifer Poindexter .   (This article is part of the  Be Positive  series. Get free article updates  here .) Isn’t it frustrating when your child resorts to attention seeking behavior and nothing you do seems to snap them out of it? It’s tiring to be the parent that  everyone  stares at because your child is constantly drawing attention at the most inopportune moment in the most embarrassing way. Every day millions of parents take their children into public settings with no issues at all. Their children stand out for their polite manners and quiet demeanor. These parents’ children are complimented and noticed for all of the right reasons. Then there are parents that face the  constant battle of trying to rein their children  in for bringing attention to themselves for all of the wrong reasons. Do you fall into the latter of the two categories? What if I told you that you are not alone? That there a
